To our friends at Anshe Sholom:

When Janice and I reflect on how we’ve benefited from our association with so many of you at our beloved Shul, we can’t help but smile. That smile has recently been turned to an even warmer feeling, a feeling beyond that which we’d felt before; a feeling of comfort and peace in the way you’ve traveled with us through an intensely difficult time. As most of you know, and how can you not from the participation it has elicited, my chronic illnesses recently raised their collective heads and seemingly declared, “gotcha: and got us they did.

In the past, Janice and I and our immediate family and long-time friends weathered through, and looking backwards could say “no big deal.” But this time it was a big deal, and very serious, and this time we also had Anshe Sholom. What might have broken us didn’t have a chance to, in no small measure because we had all of you. We had your support through prayer, visits (to Mount Sinai…. the one in Manhattan), multiple telephone calls, both to me in the hospital and to Janice at home (for although I bore the physical challenge, Janice certainly had her share of the pain). And even ultimately, a very personalized congregant-driven car service to take Janice from the hospital to our home…wow!

Through it all we knew what support we had, and it gave us tremendous strength; the strength to dig in and beat this thing. And, at least this time, we beat it. We beat it with your prayer and your love, with your concern, and with the knowledge that you are our extended family, and we love you all...thank you for being there!
