The President's Message

Dear Friends,

I would like to take the space this month to review the first year of being President. Such reviews are risky because some important events or personal contribution may be missed. Please accept my apologies for any memory errors. The year has taught me what a vibrant and busy place Anshe Sholom is and that we have the potential for even more vigorous development. We have a very high active participation ratio by our membership. If we can add new families to the membership and keep the same high rate of participation we can truly become the center for Jewish life on the Sound.

RELIGIOUS LIFE

This year brought us a marvelous, new High Holy Days cantor, Yankie Lemmer. He is a wonderful young hazzan, and he brought beauty and kavanna to the holidays. Thanks goes to David Tantleff for bringing him to Anshe Sholom. Shavout this year was the best attended and most energetic since I have been a part of the shul. We had almost forty people for the 4:45 AM Shacharis service!

FREE HEBREW SCHOOL

The school has been a big success. We have attracted new students, who might never have had the opportunity to study Judaism and Yiddishkeit. We are making plans for the new year to have the school even better organized and promote more family participation. Many thanks to the Wassermans, the Gillets, and others, whose contributions made the free school possible. Thanks also goes to Honey Neier and David Tantleff for leading the Education Committee.

SISTERHOOD

The Sisterhood continues to be one of the most active centers of life at the shul. This year saw the inauguration of the new Sukkah, donated by the Sisterhood with a generous gift from Merle Myerson. The blood drive, book discussions, and other events were great.

ADULT EDUCATION

This was a banner year for the Adult Education Committee. Of the many successes of the year, what stands out for me was the Scholar-in-Residence Shabbos, with Rabbi Doctor David Blumenthal and the Dennis Prager event. Great work from Constance Levi and all the rest of the committee.

NEW PLANNING INITIATIVE

A new planning initiative was launched this year with the hiring of the Alban Group to help lead us through a membership outreach program. An Organizing Committee has been formed and is in the initial steps of planning. The committee is being cochaired by Tom Grimaldi and Janet Waller.

LAST, BUT NOT LEAST

At the heart and soul of Anshe Sholom is our wonderful and inspiring Rabbi Rosenzveig. His energy, depth of Torah knowledge, and spiritual leadership are truly inspiring. May he lead us to new heights.

Gary Waller
