Dear Friends,

Anshe Sholom Sisterhood is involved in many activities. One activity, while having a very low profile, has a very big impact. That is our Bikur Cholim. Visiting and taking care of the sick are aspects that exemplify the concept of gemilut hasadim (the giving of loving kindness). In Ecclesiastics R.7:1 it is stated, “Whoever denies the duty of gemilut hasadim denies the fundamentals of Judaism.” Bikur Cholim is listed as one of the deeds for which “a man enjoys the fruits in this world while the principal remains for him in the world to come.” (Shabbat 127a)

Our Bikur Cholim effort is headed by Ellen Kracko with assistance from Janet Waller. Together they have allowed us this mitzvah. Last year, Ellen established a new program, Bikur Cholim Buddies. The goal was to reach out to people in our synagogue community who are ill, recuperating from illness, or are unable to get out. People are matched up with a “buddy,” and call or visit him/her at least once a week. Volunteers can contact Ellen at 633-9783 or elmi36@aol.com, or Janet at 235-0268 or jatwall@aol.com.

Anshe Sholom is a family and Bikur Cholim exemplifies how we take care of our own. Yasher Koach!

Many thanks go to Shoshana Fayon, who organized our Hanukkah meeting. We had delicious latkes and sufganiyot. Our guest was Rachel Wizenfeld, who just recently gave birth to the newest member of the shul! Rachel is the wife of Robbie—together they are one of our outreach couples who have joined our congregation.

BiYdidut (in friendship),

Merle Myerson

Interested in Joining the Sisterhood Board?

We are looking for members to join our all-volunteer board and who are willing to help with Sisterhood and our shul. We meet once a month on Tuesdays (alternating meeting times between 4:30 pm and 7:30 pm). No experience is needed, just a desire to contribute your time and energy to make a difference in our congregation and in the Jewish community. We have events and activities planned throughout the year with special events for the holidays. Anyone interested is invited to sit in on our board meetings. For more information, please contact Merle Myerson, Sisterhood President, at myersonm@optonline.net or leave a message at the shul.
